Finalist for the Utah Historical Society’s 2023 Best Book in Utah History Award, Bears Ears: Landscape of Refuge & Resistance explores 11,000 years of human and environmental history in southeast Utah. Join Fort Lewis College historian and author Andrew Gulliford for stories about this unique geography as a place of refuge and resistance for Native Americans who seek to preserve their ancestral homes, and for the descendants of Mormon families who arrived by wagon train in 1880. Enjoy passages from the book, photos, and maps. With its national and international recognition, Bears Ears National Monument is a bellwether for changing public land issues in the West.

This event is part of the programming for the Museum on Main Street exhibition, Crossroads: Change in Rural America, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Utah Humanities, touring in partnership with the M.T.
