DESCRIPTION:This exhibition features the work of the Clemente Course students at West High School exploring community art and activism. The work on display is a selection from the three projects the students completed during their first quarter of the 2024 school year. Students learned about Great Salt Lake and how decreasing water levels affect our environment, air quality, and the non-human beings relying on the lake's ecosystem. They created flags detailing what they learned and aspects of the lake they connected with. Students learned about the art form of zines as a form of community art, advocacy, protest, and education. Copies of the student's zines are a part of the permanent collection at the Salt Lake Public Library System with limited copies available for kids and teens to take home. Students learned about Chicano and Latinx art and created a personal Retablo altar box honoring a loved one, and highlighting aspects of themselves and their identities. Through these projects, students have learned how to use visual elements and text to explore their identities, tell stories, and learn about their community and environment.\N\NThe Clemente Course in the Humanities is a Utah Humanities program offered in partnership with Salt Lake Community College, the University of Utah College of Humanities, and West High School to provide honors-level and college-level study of the humanities for high school students from communities underrepresented in higher education. \N
