Jay Hopler and Evie Shockley at Westminster College

Westminster College welcomes poets Jay Hopler and Evie Shockley to the Anne Newman Sutton Weeks Series on September 21st in the Gore School of Business Auditorium.

Jay Hopler’s second book of poems, The Abridged History of Rainfall (McSweeney’s Poetry Series), was a finalist for the 2016 National Book Award for Poetry and won the gold medal for poetry in the 2016 Florida Book Awards. His other awards include a fellowship from the Lannan Foundation and the Rome Prize in Literature. He teaches at the University of South Florida.

Evie Shockley is the author of most recently, the new black, winner of the 2012 Hurston/Wright Legacy Award in Poetry; and semiautomatic (forthcoming in 2017). She has also published a critical study, Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry. Shockley is associate professor of English at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.
